Universal NBC Politics only worth your time on iPad

NBC’s new political app NBC Politics may offer universal support for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, but the app is really only worth your time if you can use it on the iPad’s large screen.

All devices can access news articles and videos, pulled from NBC content such as Today, Meet the Press and seven other sources. Of course, these items are more pleasant to view on iPad, but all work just fine on iPhone. Both versions also feature a tip sheet that features daily breaking news and live election results.

What doesn’t work on iPhone—because it’s not available—is the NBC battleground map. My vote says this is the app’s best feature for tracking the current political climate. The iPhone’s omission is critical. The iPad version also includes an interactive battleground game in which users can play a “what if” game with electoral votes. The iPad version also features tweets from NBC news personnel and the ads, present on iPhone as well, are far less intrusive. I also found a calendar of upcoming events, which is useful for staying on top of upcoming primaries. This feature is also missing from the iPhone and iPod Touch app.

Keeping up-to-date on the 2012 election is important, but either stay with the iPad version of NBC Politics or skip this one completely.
