TiVo iPad app users gesture to control playback

Raise your hand to nominate the iPad as the top universal TV remote-control device ever. All TV-related services are delivering iPad apps that let you browse and search content, and then make your TV jump to different channels. Now it’s TiVo’s turn. The TiVo app is full-featured and fun, but it doesn’t support all versions of the TiVo box, so only those with the right gear need to download it.

It’s important to know that you must have a TiVo Premiere box. There are several older models, but this app doesn’t support them. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you’ll find a long list of useful features in the app.

First, you have complete control over your TiVo’s recording capabilities. Without your TV even being on, you can see what is being recorded, and you can stop it or change the settings. Browse the guide, and schedule a show or a Season Pass of shows for recording. Drill down into a show for extra features, like cast info and photos.

When watching a recorded show, this iPad app adds gesture functionality. Swipe to move forward or backward in the timeline, or tap to pause and resume play. Try that with the universal remote you bought at Best Buy!

Perhaps best of all, this TiVo interaction all happens on the iPad without popping up on your TV’s screen and interrupting your significant other’s TV watching. I predict this app will save a few blossoming relationships, and maybe a marriage or two.
