Take a fine fall weekend road trip with these iPhone apps

Fall is a fine time for a road trip to discover the unknown and rediscover your sanity. Whether you’re the type of traveler who plans every moment of your trip, or a wanderer who takes on all the back roads, here are some iPhones apps to plan a trip you surely won’t forget.

Urbandig

The free Urbandig app is filled with hidden places and secret tips from local experts that you won’t uncover with the typical travel app. Whether you want to take a road trip to far away places, or just explore some undiscovered gems in your own town, Urbandig has suggestions for you. From tips on art in the streets and vintage finds, food trucks and dive bars, this quirky app has your wandering road trip needs covered.

Jetsetter

If you prefer a swanky W Hotel over a run-of-the-mill Hampton Inn for your road trip bunking needs, the free Jetsetter app may just be for you. This travel app is filled with sweet deals on modern and luxury hotel stays and travel packages. We are talking wine country weekends, Las Vegas party packages, spas, ski resorts and beach vacations. So if you are looking for a posh road trip filled with luxurious touches, Jetsetter should be your first stop on the travel app front.

Amtrak

What is more mysteriously fun than a train trip across the state? That’s right: a road trip doesn’t always mean you have to do the driving. Check out the free Amtrak app and plan a romatic getaway for two, or for a bevy of your closest friends, and let someone else do the driving while you enjoy the scenery and the countryside.

Free City Maps and Walks

Once you arrive at your destination, check out the Free City Maps and Walks app for more than 470 cities. It’s perfect for times when you don’t want to shell out cash for a living breathing tour guide. I pulled up four free self-guided walking tours for San Diego that I plan on using during my fall vacation. Buyer beware, though: upgrades like navigation are an extra charge in some cases with this app.

Blues Trail

Explore the history of Mississippi blues music with this free and aptly named app. If you’ve road-tripped to Nashville, Tennessee, one too many times then wander over to Mississippi for a trip down the blues memory lane. Discover almost the entire state with turn-by-turn directions and blues history stops along the way including the birthplace of legendary blues man, B.B. King.

Chicago Taverns & Tales

If brews are more your thing than blues, then check out the Chicago Tavern & Tales app ($1.99) to discover some history on tap. This travel app is filled with Windy City brew pubs with a side of history about the gangsters who once sat at the bar, and the well-known visitors who once graced its tables. You can drive to the city but once you hit the bar, please cab around town.
