Dexter’s free iPhone app: It’s bloody good!

Fresh off the start of Season 5, “Dexter” on Showtime has delivered an app for that show’s cult following. The writing for “Dexter,” one of the best shows on television, is spectacular, and the shows are riveting. The Free Dexter App is filled with videos of upcoming episodes as well as in-depth interviews with the cast, writers and the show’s creators.

It lists every episode, with descriptions from Seasons 1 through 4, and schedule listings of upcoming shows. It also lets you set reminders of when the shows are on.

Another treat is seeing video clips of the cast at Comic Con in San Diego. You get to see, first-hand, how popular the show is by the crowd size and fan comments. Michael C. Hall, along with his co-star and new wife, Jennifer Carpenter, and other members of the cast and some of the writers are also featured in a panel setting to answer viewer questions and moderated questions. It’s a unique view into the show through the eyes of the actors. Included are individual video interviews with each actor about his or her role in the show and how the characters will evolve.

I love the one-on-one analysis of the writers into the psyche of the characters. If you’re a writer and you want to study great writing, then pick up this app for that, as well.

It includes a trivia game to test your knowledge of the show, and then rates you. It’s packed with some extras, such as wallpapers for your phone, sneak peaks, links to itunes for music soundtracks, apps, a podcast and DVDs of past seasons.

Showtime also uses this app as a marketing tool, offering a $25 gift card and a 15 percent discount at its online store.
