APPOLICIOUS ADVISOR RATING:

3 of 5 bars
  • PRICE: $0.99
  • TASTY: Robust group of sound effects and clips should please fans of the original series.
  • BUMMER: Two dollars seems like a steep price for what is essentially a skin for your phone.
  • COOL: Making a flipping motion with your phone actually opens up the communicator for use – a neat visual trick.

How much would you pay to momentarily turn your iPhone into a communicator like the kind found in the original “Star Trek” television series? This essential question will probably decide more than anything else whether you’ll actually download this $1.99 iPhone app.

Features-wise, Star Trek Original Series Communicator does precisely what it’s advertised to do -- it’s an app that turns your iPhone screen into the Trek communicator. There are random ambient noises that play when you’re using the app, and two buttons for sound effects and audio clips from the show.

Aside from that, a third button brings you to the phone portion of the app, where you can use the app just like you’d use your iPhone. Your address book is there for your use and you’re able to enter in any phone number you like.

So, the question is: What’s this worth to you? CBS Mobile offers the Star Trek Original Series Communicator up for $1.99 (though a recent Comic-Con discount made it 99 cents for a brief time). As I’m the biggest of Trek fans, it’s hard for me to imagine how this isn’t just free. I mean, it’s a dozen sound effects and a phone skin!

Still, as a huge fan of the TV show “Lost,” I can imagine paying $2 for something just as trivial, so I can understand the plight of someone who wants something (or anything) connected with the Star Trek experience.

If that sounds like you, you’ve probably stopped reading this review awhile ago and gone and downloaded the app. If it doesn’t describe you, well, this is probably something you can skip.

I thought this app was a natural for the iPhone users who are Star Trek fans. My problem is the embarrassment of actually using it in front of people. NO WAY, JOSE! I only use it when I'm alone.
