Reuters Galleries iPad app good, but could be much better

Review for Reuters Galleries

APPOLICIOUS ADVISOR RATING:

3 of 5 bars
  • PRICE: Free
  • TASTY: Simple interface, beautiful slideshows.
  • BUMMER: Slow loads and frequent crashes.
  • COOL: Share inividual photos via Twitter.

A companion app to Reuters News Pro for iPadReuters Galleries (free) is an excellent way to see the news in pictures and video. That is, if you can keep it open.

Open Reuters Galleries and see a menu of slideshows—Editor’s Choice for the last few days, photo galleries which are specific to current big news stories, some human-interest pieces and several video news stories. Tap on a slideshow thumbnail and prepare to wait for the photos to load.

The slideshows, however, are beautiful. Watch in landscape mode and high-definition photos fill the screen. A tap brings up the caption of each photo. Individual photos can be shared via Twitter. Facebook and email sharing would be nice.

Reuters Galleries crashes -- a lot. Photos can be very slow to load, though you can try to swipe to the next photo as one continues loading—the slideshows don’t necessarily load in order.

The slow load times and frequent crashing have to be fixed—if I’d paid for this app, I’d demand a refund.

When these issues are resolved, however, there’s no doubt that Reuters Galleries will become one of my daily-use apps.
