If you relish tools and gadgets, the iHandy Carpenter app will elicit oohs and aahs. But aside from straightening picture frames and checking the level of a pool table, the app has more form than function.
The $1.99 iHandy Carpenter has an ample supply of the neat-o factor. It offers five tools, rich in texture and color, that perform as expected. There is a copper-colored plumb bob, watery-blue surface level, lime-green bubble level bar, and a brushed-metal ruler and protractor.
On the practical side, it’s imperative to calibrate the leveling instruments to make sure they are accurate. Calibration is easily accomplished with a flat surface and one button tap.
One limitation is the ruler can only measure one screen-length at a time. So to measure something with any real length, you have to place your finger at the end of the screen and physically move your iPhone or iPod Touch to the right until the starting point of the ruler lines up with your finger. Then, swoosh the screen to the next set of markings, and repeat as needed.
iHandySoft Inc. offers the iHandy Level app free. If you don’t get excited about products such as pliers multi-tools, save your two bucks and get the free level app. On the other hand, for the apparatus aficionado, the full-size iHandy Carpenter app is an intriguing toolbox addition.
