If multiple credible reports are believed, it is no longer a question of if Apple will unveil a next generation iPhone. Speculation rather revolves around when it will come out and in what form.
According to “multiple sources” close to the situation, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that the new iPhone will have an “extra-thin screen.”
The current iPhone screen is 9.3 millimeters. The technology behind the thinner screen, according to DisplaySearch analyst Hiroshi Hayase (who spoke to the WSJ) “integrates touch sensors into the LCD, making it unnecessary to have a separate touch-screen layer."
The article also noted that removing that display layer would reduce supply chain costs, a specialty of Apple CEO Tim Cook.
While there are rumors that Apple will unveil the next iPhone as early as next month, chances are the launch event will occur after Labor Day. Apple historically has hosted events in early September around its music and iTunes aspirations. The iPhone 4S was introduced to the world last October.
The new iPhone rumors come on the heels of a New York Times report from yesterday saying that Apple is also about to introduce a new series of smaller and cheaper iPads.
