Let’s make one thing clear: Yahoo! TimeTraveler will not be the solution to the time traveling future we all dream about. Your iPhone is cool, but it’s not that cool. Not yet, anyway.
The app actually takes its name from the idea that you can travel from one destination to another within the same city and set an end time for your adventure. Once you’ve set up your time available, beginning and end point, the app populates with an itinerary of things to do on your way to complete your journey. For example a trip from the west side of Chicago to the south side will take you through a few parks, across some historical bridges and finally to your destination point.
TimeTraveler tells you know how much time you have to spend in each location and guides you via a map from one point to the next. You’re never lost, you’re always on time, and best of all, you’ll get a chance to see some things you might not have known about. Unfortunately, only a few, select cities are supported in TimeTraveler currently, but the list is pretty good. Users can map trips in Amsterdam, Atlanta, Austin, Bangkok, all the way to San Antonio, San Diego, Seattle, and Toronto with many others in between.
The trips the app creates can be saved for viewing later or shared with friends via the usual social networks. You can also see restaurants and hotels along the journey in case you need to take a rest or grab some grub.
While Yahoo! TimeTraveler is fun if you want to see what you can cram-in to a trip around your own home, it’s amazingly useful if you’re in an unfamiliar place. It’ll keep you busy and entertained for days given a few loose set of directions. For those travelers that don’t feel like consulting a guide book every few minutes, it’s a great travel app.
