I love this app. You fill out a questionnaire when you first open the app, selecting topic areas that you are interested in, and the app starts serving up news stories for you. If you like a story, vote it up, if not, vote it down and it will start to tailor the news stories that it feeds you. My only complaint with the app is that it eventually starts to hyper-specialize what stories it shows you. For example, I tend to like tech and science stories, and frequently vote them up, but now, that is almost all it is serving me. It should randomly throw out a few news stories, each day, that are not even in my list of topics, just to see if I'm interested in broadening my reading scope, rather than narrowing it down. Still, it serves up great news stories!

I have been using Zite for a couple of months and think that it's a great way to get news. The layout is simple and organized, making it easy to skim through and read items that are interesting. It organizes by category, and allows you to choose which categories you're interested in. Definitely a big thumbs up!

Unlike Flipboarrd, navigation on Zite is easy and non-gimmicky. It learns your likes and dislikes by learning what you read. You can also use the thumb up/down rating on an article. It feeds you what you want with an easy accessible menu system. The news looks great. It integrates well with social media without being intrusive.

The UI on the app makes great use of the iPad's screen space. With a quick thumbs up or thumbs down you can teach Zite what type of news you'd like to read. My only "complaint" is the google reader integration. Although it says it's synced with my google reader, I haven't seen many of my subscribed sources show up in my personalized news. Also, I'd like the option to share a story I find interesting through my greader. I love that I can pick my own categories and share directly to twitter. Food news has been quite fun! Otherwise, a great app especially for the price!

Zite is nearly perfect

I've been using Zite for about a week now. As a custom ezine it excels in formatting and basic design. I like the ability to rate articles which will serve up more articles like it. You can also like authors too, if you want to follow someone and their beat. Multiple font size adjustments and some customization features are nice, because usually Zite serves up the most popular content. I also like how it handles category selection from a slide out menu. Nice design selection.

On the downside, Zite said it couldn't pull enough from my Twitter account, which I found hard to believe with 1,400 followers and 900 following. Instead of channels like Flipboard it has subject areas plus you can customize your own subjects like San Francisco and Boston, the two I added (but no Bay Area category). But I wish you could add channels as well.

Still, Zite will give Flipboard some competition. I just wish there were an iPhone version.
