There's a couple of huge fails on this app that make me less than interested in really exploring this more. But first, let's talk about what this is supposed to be.

This app is basically foursquare, gowalla or some other such check in app, but add to it societies you can join to learn more about different things you might like in the types of places you visit. In theory it seems a lot like a personalized Yelp combined with Foursquare.

But really, to me thus far, I'm just not interested. Why? Because when I type in something that it can find I get spinning wheel of death. No option to add a place comes up and it doesn't seem to stop the spinning wheel on it's own. I suppose that's not a huge deal but it is annoying. The second thing I'm not fond of is that the societies seem less than interesting to me. Some of them might be great but, well, it's another check in app and I just don't need help finding great new places and things to do... that's what facebook and yelp are for.

If you have time for another checkin app definitely check this out... other people love it. If you're already too taxed with the apps you have, skip this until it becomes THE checkin app.

Loving more than Foursquare

I just started using Whrrl in a real way in the past couple of weeks and I'm loving it more than foursquare. There are no "mayor specials" that are totally unattainable, and there are really great suggestions and reviews with each checkin that I've used to not only learn more about the place I'm visiting, but I also love the "users went here after this place" feature that suggests nearby places. Really cool idea also on this idea of "societies" so each check in groups you with other like-minded users.

I'm cheering for the underdog of location-based checkins

I don't understand why this app has been made the redheaded stepchild of the location-based checkin apps, because I love the depth and the interface far better than Foursquare or Gowalla...yeah I said it...I like it better than Foursquare. They use the word "story" a lot in advertising their product and I guess it's pretty apt as it's easy to build a page where you can see maps, and entries and photos of all the places you've traveled to. I'm still a bit iffy on the "societies" idea and I'm not sure I like it more than mayorships. This app doesn't get mentioned enough and is always overshadowed by BrightKite and others, but it's not to be missed.

Ideal photo sharing app with a difference

The idea of creating a "story" of photos, comments, etc is one which I like.
I can post photos throughout the day and others view them as a story.
I find this a much more appealing way of seeing other peoples photos.
The flow between the photos just involves a screen swipe, similar to swiping between photos in your camera roll/photo library.

Very easy to use and get used to
