A free and decent alternative for the weather app (v1.2.0)

  • App review for Moxier World
  • Posted by ynzr April 12, 2010
  • Recommended for Outdoors Enthusiasts

Having been thoroughly disappointed with "MegaWeather" and "World Weather," I gave Moxier World a try since it's free (I already wasted four bucks trying the aforementioned apps).

As far as weather information, Moxier World doesn't provide more detailed information than the built in weather app. It provides the same basic 5-day forecast and current conditions. But, it does include some extra features, such as the local time/date for each location. The main screen lists all of your locations with current conditions and time/date. Tap a location on your list and you'll get the full view with a 5-day forecast.

Moxier World also let's you view webcam images from your locations (if available of course) and provides a link to the Wikipedia article concerning the particular location. The only options are for switching between Fahrenheit and Celsius.

The only minor annoyance of the app is the small banner ad at the bottom of the main screen. But, the app is free and the ad is pretty unobtrusive so not a big deal.

If you're simply looking to replace the standard weather app with something a little nicer looking, Moxier World is probably worth the time it takes to download it (remember, it's free). But, if you want more detailed current conditions, detailed forecasts, radar images, etc., then look elsewhere.

Great New Match 3 Game

  • App review for Peppers The Game
  • Posted by durgadas April 12, 2010

For Match 3 games, there appear to be only two key factors: flashy graphics & exciting noises that are used to make up for a lack of creativity in how the games are played (Bejeweled series comes to mind here), or, like this Peppers app, create a new gameplay mode for your 'matching' enjoyment.

Full Disclosure: I was asked to review this app by the developer, who claimed his game was more fun than Bejeweled. Well, I have Bejeweled 2 on my iPhone and I agree it IS more fun than that.

Since "more entertaining" was a claim used in the developer's request for review, I think I need to weigh in on whether or not it was more "entertaining" than Bejeweled or not.

The graphics aren't as "whiz-bang" as Bejeweled, because BeJeweled has lots of flashy things happening graphically and shiny moving objects abound. In Peppers, the noises are less entertaining, especially the female voice used for this app, so one level of stimulation isn't there, and given that the graphics are excellent, but fairly static, another visual entertainment wasn't on par with Bejeweled for pure gaming excitement.

My only suggestion could be to add another gameplay mode so there are three really different play modes, and find out more ways to increase how to play Match 3 and put them in. In this excellent row-sliding mode, I found the combos to be more satisfying than other Match 3 style games I've played. As a genre, it's not my favorite kind of game, but addictive for some, I know.

Still, I really enjoyed the game, and enjoyed it more than Bejeweled PRECISELY because of the innovative row-sliding mode (in the Hot Stuff and On Fire Levels) that Bejeweled doesn't have, which I found to be more fun to strategize how to maximally stack up combos.

This feature alone made the game better for me and one that I will likely enjoy for some time to come. Let's hope more updates improve the core competency of this app, which is it's interesting gameplay mode, and hope they add more. If they continue doing so, I think Bejeweled will have a strong challenger on it's hands.

Nice UI, iffy performance (v1.2.2)

World Weather has a pretty UI and gives you more information than the built-in weather app. It also features a 6-day forecast when you tilt the iPhone horizontally. However, I get rather inconsistent performance for cities outside of the US. For an app that's titled "World Weather" I expect it to at least provide information for major international cities. The search feature for adding a location works fine, but when I tried to add a few cities in China, they would all turn into "Saltpond, Ghana."

I suppose this app would be pretty decent if it let me add the locations I wanted. But good intentions don't warrant a $0.99 price tag.

I wish refunds were possible (v2.8)

I've been looking for a better weather app than the built-in one and stumbled across MegaWeather. Well, I wish I hadn't.

It's pretty awesome when you open up a weather app expecting to find, well, weather info, and it says "Can't Get Information" (can you sense the sarcasm). It's a shame because the UI looks nice. But, I didn't pay $2.99 to stare at a UI that can't fetch weather info.

I searched through some forums and the App Store reviews and apparently this issue has come up a few times before. A weather app that can't consistently provide information is pretty useless. I'd recommend steering clear of MegaWeather.

  • App review for Simple RPG

It's a really funny concept. The no-effort RPG. They did a great job thinking up the names of items and overall it's funny to watch an auto-playing, auto-leveling RPG show you how the character is progressing. The only question left to ask is, does anyone ever watch this app past about halfway through the first level? Not me...

A great buy at a fair price

For young kids, say 3-4 this is a great game. Has a number of facets to it -- memory, numbers, colours, alphabet etc. Very easy to pick up and the child gets to collect stickers as they pass each level. Only problem with that is, as the game goes on forever they never want to give the iPod back to you. A good buy at a fair price.

AAA-is a must have

I really love triple A and as a side note they offer all kinds of other services besides car towing. They also offer certain DMV services like car registration. Also, tons of discounts to places like Universal Studios, etc. Having said that, this a pretty much another way to use your triple AAA service. It's an app that allows you to do everything you would if you had to call them. Although, I think I would feel the need to call (just to be sure) no matter what. It makes that automatic and easy too.

Racing Live-Can someone explain this app to me

When I downloaded it, I thought I imagined it would be an online racing game or something like that. Instead, I found it to be confusing. There's no racing, just weird point systems and choices and outcomes based on them. Am I wrong? Please help.

It's the idea of rock, paper, scissors on your phone, but it's called tea round. Also, it's great for work and the nifty part is, it keeps track of who has to do what and whose turn it is if you want it to.

I don't know about the paid version, but the free version is a bunch of common sense tips about how not to run out your battery. Location services-Off.3g off.airplanemode on.-etc. You can find these on the internet without downloading, or you can just think about it for a minute.

Have2P-Just the idea of this app is PERFECT

  • App review for Have2P

For those of us, who can't just go anywhere in case of an "emergency", this app is the next best thing. It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing especially in a city like NY. In some cases, you'll have to remember just because you find a bathroom, it doesn't mean they'll let you use it.

Flashlight-It's perfect, it's a flashlight.

When it comes to flashlight apps, there isn't too much that can go wrong and many of them are free. Download this one and you'll be very happy. It's an old standard, I can't live without as long as it's bright and doesn't super drain my battery-which this doesn't. Now, an app that can find my car keys in the morning and vice versa, that could be a little tricky.

Variety-It's a teaser

It seems like this app is just a teaser for the parts of variety site/mag that you have to pay for. It's O.K if you're not expecting anything more.

Match-the App is great! It's the people who use it?

The Match App is awesome. In fact, it will alert you to anything going on with your profile on the site and is quick and easy. More or less, there is nothing the app has that the site doesn't. Keep in mind that MATCH is not free and so the app really isn't either. I think they do have a trial but after Mr.awesomeparttimelover and kingofsantamonica and gloriouskissesonyoursmoothbutt wouldn't leave me alone I was like who are these people? And deleted it. Why is it so hard to find people with normal user names on there.

Since I haven't seen many apps out there that have a similar functionality, it's difficult to compare. But this is an awesome app to have on hand in an emergency when you can't really think straight. There have been complaints that it's slow and slows down your phone, but I didn't find that to be the case. It's worth it to download it and have a look and feel. If you don't like it, delete it, it's free.

Makes a fool out of me!

Simple! Tap in order 1 to 25 as fast as possible. Quick games! You'll likely be tapping 'Start Game' the moment you finish a game, and spending far too much time trying to best your or a friend's score. Each game takes less than 20 seconds, but wasting an hour is easy as I tap those buttons with glazed eyes like a heroin addict.

Simple, fast boot up, atmospheric game.

  • App review for Canabalt

  • Recommended for Gamers

Boots up quickly, the only control is jump, a quick tap for a small jump, and harder tap for a long jump.

Simple gameplay, simple controls, and simple graphics, everything simple, yet exciting and challenging, the theme song 'run' does a lot to add to the game, creating an exciting run to the inevitable death.

I love the monsters, smoke, and rocket shadows in the background!

Another great game to kill a few minutes..
