Not very useful, Paypal site is better

I just didn't find this useful. The Paypal site itself is more useful, especially on the iPad.

Far more useful than I expected

I assumed that managing my Linux servers on a handheld device would be terrible, but it's not. This app does a great job of listing all your servers, including their status (green/red dot by the name), and letting you connect instantly. The shell interface is very well designed, with a transparent keyboard that works very well. Arrows and other less-used options are provided with a pop-up pad (press and hold). Speed is excellent, and all the expected SSH and Telnet functionality is provided.

Easier than using eBay on a desktop

This app is so well layed out and so fast that it's better to use than eBay's own site. I find myself picking up the iPad to do my eBaying even when sitting in front of my desktop. Combined with Paypal's mobile authentication (simple PIN), it makes paying for items very fast.

I do NOT use it for listing items however.

Powerful and easy to use Remote Desktop & VNC app

I use this app to manage various Windows, Mac, and Linux servers and systems. Its user interface makes it easy to set up multiple systems in advance and get quick one-touch access to them as needed. Responsiveness is excellent, and pinch/zoom/scrolling is implemented very well. It's far easier to use than I expected.

A simple and reasonably powerful database

  • App review for Bento for iPad

Bento is a database for non-database people. It is NOT a powerful SQL database. It's not even Filemaker Pro. But it's something that any computer user can use to make simple databases quite easily in a graphical way (no code to write). Bento for the iPhone and the iPad will synchronize data back to your desktop, and even allow you to create and edit databases right on the phone or pad. A great variety of pre-made databases is available, and they can all be modified to suit your specific needs.

Nice user interface and not too much news

  • App review for AP News

This is a good app if you just want to read the top ten or so stories in each category and locally. The design is good, clean, and intuitive. The app is responsive and quick to update the stories. Configurable so you can see just the categories you want and easily flip between them. The ability to pick up local news from your local paper is a nice bonus. It's not an in-depth reader for someone who wants to read an hour's worth of news.

Unreliable and ugly UI

The user interface design on this app leaves much to be desired. The background is dark and distracting, while the fonts are pretty small without reason, since the iPad's huge screen is mostly wasted by empty space. I've never been able to get it to work reliably. Sometimes the notifications work, sometimes they don't (while at the same time other notifications are working fine). Overall it's pretty disappointing.

Powerful tool for diet management

The developers really did a great job of constructing an intuiting user interface for an app that has a lot of power. The built-in database of foods is quite impressive, and the ability to enter a bar code really simplifies looking up very specific items. The UI is clean and attractive, and helps simplify the huge list of features into categories that make sense. The ability to sync with an online system and with an iPhone really is key to making this as useful as possible. You can enter your mean immediately on your iPhone which you always have with you, while using the iPad and online service to view graphs and details in a larger view.

Great magazine reader

This app is much like the book reader apps, but for magazines. They did a fantastic job on the user interface. Usage is very simple and the look is clean. It does all the expected things like remember where you left off reading, and easy zoom in/zoom out functionality. I look forward to eliminating all of my paper-based reading materials.

A tradeoff for features, but worth the trade

  • App review for TouchCloset
  • Posted by rachely April 20, 2010

I read through a lot of descriptions before settling on this closet organizer, and chose TouchCloset because I wanted an app that also had an online component to it. In order to have this feature I sacrificed some of the things I would really like to have in a closet organization app such as a calendar and better tagging and organization of outfits. Altogether though, this is a pretty good app and I've been shocked how quick and smooth it runs. In fact, I though something was wrong with it at first because I didn't realize that it was loading all my images online just as quickly as I added them with no delay or interruption. I've put in almost 200 items now and am pretty happy with the workings of the app. I would have really liked to test a few others before settling on this one but it's such a high investment to start getting your wardrobe loaded.

Movie fans, this is a must-have.

  • App review for Skip or Stay
  • Posted by Erik April 19, 2010
  • Recommended for Film/TV Fans

More and more, studios are putting bonus scenes after (or during) the credits to movies, whether it be new footage, bloopers, or whatever. Unfortunately, there's no good way for the movie-goer to know whether to sit through all of the credits.

That is, until now...

Skip or Stay does one very simple thing. After choosing a film from an automatically updated list of current theatrical releases, it tells you whether to "Skip" the credits or to "Stay" through them.

How does it know? It "crowd-sources" the information. The first few Skip or Stay users give their feedback on a film, and once the data is overwhelmingly in one direction or the other, that recommendation is given to everyone.

I do movie reviews, and I see new movies constantly, almost always on opening night. My point is this: In all the time I've been using this app (at least six months), I've only ever had two movies where I've needed to vote (and even then it gives the current vote tally, which is nice). Even on opening night, there are almost always enough votes to provide a definitive decision. And I've never seen it be wrong.

Movie fans, this app is FREE. It's a no-brainer. Get it. Sure, it'll sit on the last page of apps collecting dust most of the time, but each time you see a movie, you'll be glad you have it.

Um, I'm Pretty Sure We're Moving

When I first looked at what this app was supposed to do I thought to myself “This is probably even worse than texting while driving”. After all, you’re supposed to watch how you drive on the app and improve (by not accelerating so hard or cornering so hard, etc) while driving. Yeah that’s right, watching your phone while driving.

Needless to say I wasn’t into that idea so I enlisted my boyfriend to help test the app. I sat in the passenger seat and let him drive so I could watch the app. Apparently in the entire 4 mile drive we NEVER accelerated. Not once according to the app. I’m pretty sure that we did. When my boyfriend smoked the clutch on my car just to see if we accelerated (with the app on the dash) we STILL didn’t accelerate according to the app.

I’d love to say that this was the perfect app to keep your kids entertained or really anyone in the passenger seat while improving your green driving but frankly the app just doesn’t work. Yet again another green app #fail.

News App

Nice arrangement of text, fast and brief articles with just enough info. Supports many different papers, with related articles. One of the best News apps! Don't pass it up.

Believe it or not, absolutely worth the money.

This company offers "Naturespace" (also a good app) for free, but Thundergod is way, way better.

I've had sleep problems for years, and I've tried just about every sleep/relaxation CD on the market (or so it seems). I've also tried many sleep-related apps.

Thundergod is simply the absolute best thunderstorm/rain system I've seen, whether on CD or app. At the risk of sounding over-the-top, I can honestly say that in all my years of product hunting, I've yet to find anything even close.

There are three different styles of thunderstorm, plus an additional two rainstorm options. There's an option for earbud enhancement, built-in volume controls, and a sleep timer (or the program can run indefinitely).

Unlike many other apps that pop or crack when a loop repeats, these are seamless, continuous thunderstorms. They're dynamic, very realistic, and never feel repetitive. And the audio quality is incredible.

Whether you want it for sleep, for reading, or just to relax, Thundergod is by far the best soundscape program out there. Yes, the $9.99 price tag will scare some away. However, I've never once regretted this purchase. Of the 500+ apps I own, this is unquestionably one of the best.

Make Me Carbon Smart!

FINALLY! I think I’ve finally found a decent green app.

While this app isn’t necessarily going to change the world or even change your world what it will do is educate you about all sorts of Carbon Neutral programs happening around the world. If you purchase a Piqqo product you can even look up the specific product carbon information. This makes me want to buy something just to check it out (which admittedly isn’t all that green of me!)

Quite possibly the best part of this app is the Carbon Wiki where you can “bust the carbon jargon.” Apparently there are a lot of acronyms in carbon projects and this app will help you deal with that and truly explain why the project matters and what it is doing.

I suspect if you’re a carbon neutral guru this app may not impress you. But if you like to use your phone as a learning tool as much as an actual phone and you’d like to be a bit more green then this app will work well for you. Now off to find a Piqqo product (hey, I can just enter the number and learn more right?)

Since When is 2000 Miles Local?

I had been so hopeful that eventually after trying enough “green” apps I’d find one I actually liked. Sadly this one is not it.

I keep hoping that somehow without me knowing there’d be a new restaurant in town that serves local and organic food for cheap. I know it probably isn’t going to happen but when I downloaded this app I figured it might just remind me of something I’ve forgotten about or hadn’t heard of before. And it did.

It did not because there’s a new restaurant in my city. No, it told me about new places because it told me about places 2000 miles away. Somehow going to South Carolina for dinner doesn’t seem all that eco friendly to me. More importantly the idea that most of the products listed were hundreds if not thousands of miles away was quite interesting for an app with the word localvore in it and one that actually wants to use your current location. You know where I am app and you’re suggesting a place 2000 miles away? Seriously, what’s up with that? How can this app get this entire idea so utterly wrong?

Well, I’m off in search of a good green app, in the meantime this is yet another one for the recycling bin. #epicfail

One for the Recycle Bin

From what I can tell this app is nothing more than a green products advertisement. When I ask it to search for local organic grocery stores it doesn’t pull up the store closest to me, the local food co-op and instead pulls up something really far away that I’ve never heard of.

Moreover when you tap on the “Earth Day Net” link at the bottom of the app you’re supposed to go to local earth day events but instead you’re taken to a broken web page.

This app is so poor that I was almost wondering if it came out last year. I sure hope so otherwise they’ve simply wasted a ton of money doing nothing with an application. If I could rate this zero bars I would.

Find Me A Market... No Really!

  • App review for Find Green

I wanted to like this app but knowing better than to fall in love too quickly I decided to do a bit of quality testing. When I put in that I wanted to find farmers markets within walking distance of my house I got a list of coffee shops. In fact the one farmers market in walking distance from my house wasn’t listed at all.

Switching over to restaurants since it’s dinner time I found it to be reasonably accurate though it included a grocery store. Granted, this grocery store has a pretty complete deli with lots of delicious prepared foods but still, not really what anyone would consider a restaurant.

In the end the app is just OK. Probably best used for areas you’re unfamiliar with (say travelling) but unless you really don’t know your neighborhood it probably won’t tell you anything new.

For All Your (Toilet) Paper Needs

I have to admit, I don’t buy a lot of paper towels, paper napkins or tissue paper. Frankly in the greenest of senses I find the idea of buying these regularly pretty, well, un-green. That said, if you are going to buy these things why not buy as green as possible. And this app will help you with that.

It will also help you purchase green TP since most of us probably do still buy that. The most interesting part of this app is that several of the “green” sounding tissues aren’t really recommended. Items like Earth First Toilet Paper are rated as “Could Do Better” do to their lack of post consumer recycled content.

Other than that however most of the information provided in this app is pretty obvious. The ones that say they have a good percentage of post consumer recycling do well, other recycling not as good and those without any recycled content fair poorly. Because most of this information is pretty accessible on the label I doubt this app will tell you anything a greeny can’t figure out on their own.
