This app is just beyond brilliant. Not only does it tag that song that's stuck in your head...that tune doesn't have to be playing. No, really...just sing or hum part of the song and SoundHound will name it!

For top 40 fans

You know the lyrics but can't remember the song or maybe you know the artist but not the song. Maybe you know the name of the song. Well this app is for you.

Say the artist and title of the song into the app and it will return information on the song along with lyrics if they're available. You can buy the app from iTunes once you've found it.
Great, except that for many songs you don't get to hear verification of the song (like you do on Shazam almost always) and more importantly this app will not find more obscure music. Gary Numan's new Dead Son Rising is nowhere to be found.

If you're a top 40 fan this might be for you. For the rest of us there's Google.

With this app, I win ALL those "what IS that song" challenges. And I don't tell anyone how I do it.

It Works and it's Free

I'd seen my friend's copy of Shazam in action, and it was pretty cool, but only found the song, maybe half the time. It was annoying that the free version cut you off after 5 songs, so, they bought the pro version. Totally fun to have. However, I found SoundHound, and their free version has an unlimited number of identifications, as long as you don't mind the ads, which are pretty small and unobtrusive. This app is great, it can recognize a song playing on the radio, or playing on your device, or one that you sing a few bars to. It was able to identify maybe 9 out of 10 songs I tried. When it identifies a song, it brings up an iTunes preview that you can use to listen to 30 seconds of the song, and/or choose to purchase it from iTunes. It also will display the song's lyrics if they are available, and if they are not available, it will let you search for them on Google, and display the results. It also brings back YouTube search results for the same Artist. This app is just packed with features, any music lover is going to love it... and it's FREE.

Hum a few bars...

Recently, friends and I thought it'd be great if there were an app that you could hum a song and have it tell you what it is. This is that app! Shazam does a good job identifying songs playing near you but Soundhound takes it 5 steps further. I love the instant lyrics for what's playing on my iPod. Great app for free!!

This app is the best song recognition tool there is. It can understand any song I throw at it! Much better than Shazam. It automatically pulls up lyrics, band info, album info, history. And of course ordering info. I love it.

Does a lot in one app

This app takes a lesson from Shazam and can identify which song is playing on the radio, but it also does a lot more.

It shows you what songs are popular lately, what songs are underplayed, and what songs have recently been discovered by other SoundHound users.

One great feature is that it shows you the lyrics for the song that is playing on the iPod feature of your phone, which is great.
