With such competition among photo editing apps, a developer has to do all they can just to stand out. Creating a zombie photo editor and pairing it with a famous director’s movie franchise is a good start, and for the most part, George A. Romero’s App of the Dead delivers.
The premise behind App of the Dead ($1.99) is that you can take photos from your iPhone and give them a touch of the dead by adding visual effects to make you and your pals look like zombies. There are gross eyes; busted, scarred skin pieces; and a bunch of zombie-friendly weapons, too.
That it’s so easy to figure the app out is a strength. You take your photo, you edit in some extra eyes onto your face and voila, you’ve got a picture you can save where you look like a zombie.
But the ease of use also cuts into any other customization. While there are some color gradient options, it took me awhile to realize they weren’t actually to be used on the photos, just the objects you’ve added to the photo. That there is no way to give your existing pictures a bit of a darker edge themselves is very disappointing.
On the plus side, once you’ve edited your zombie picture to your liking, you are able to enter into a separate screen that lets you take shotgun shots at your zombie face. It’s sort of weird at first, but seeing your photo drenched in “your” blood is also quite in the spirit of a zombie photo app, and a very unique way to set this app out from many others in the same category.
Fans of Romero won’t find any sneak-peak goodies to grab in the app, so this is a purchase best made solely if you’re looking to "zombie up" your pictures. Just be prepared for an app so simple a zombie could use it.
