We have winners! The 82nd Academy Awards culminated with one major upset—The Hurt Locker took home the Oscar for Best Picture. Other major category winners include: Jeff Bridges for Best Actor, Sandra Bullock for Best Actress, and Kathryn Bigelow beat out ex-husband James Cameron for Best Director, becoming the first woman in history to take home the award. Here are some Oscar-themed apps that will hopefully be around come next year's awards ceremony.
To kick things off, the free PopSugar Mobile and E! Online iPhone apps are my top picks for catching up on all the awards coverage, best and worst dressed celebs, and other entertainment news.
L.A. Times’ “The Envelope”
Do you get chills when you hear the words “the envelope please?” Then you most definitely need the free Los Angeles Times’ “The Envelope” iPhone app. This inventive app gives you $10,000 to invest in a portfolio of predicted Oscar winners in a virtual Academy Awards stock market. Watch as your pick’s stock rises or falls. You can also access all the latest movie buzz news straight from the iPhone app.
Vanity Fair Hollywood
Much like “The Envelope,” the free Vanity Fair Hollywood iPhone app also lets you predict your favorites for Oscar-winning history. However, Vanity Fair stepped it up a notch with photos and video, coupling its news section and a Facebook chat section to go along with its prediction leader boards. You can also create your own group by inviting your Facebook friends, similar to any sports betting pool. If you must, you can also check out the blatant advertising of the L’Oreal Gift Bag section on the iPhone app.
The Red Carpet
Talk about putting your money where your mouth is! The Red Carpet iPhone app ($1.99) gives expert Oscar predictors a chance at winning $1 million. Just fill out your picks and if they all take home a statue, you will be entered for a chance to take home a movie star-sized paycheck. This stellar Oscar-themed iPhone app is a comprehensive guide of hopeful Oscar nominees, complete with movie previews and the ability to add movies to your Netflix queue. The iPhone app also includes the requisite buzz section with up-to-date movie news.
