iPhone App Video Review: Hypership Out of Control

by Andrew Koziara

Hypership Out of Control is a great retro styled top-down shooter from Fun Infused Games. It combines old school graphics, gameplay, and sound with modern touch controls for a fun experience, although it can get very tiresome after a while.

The basic premise is that you are flying through space in your ship when suddenly the accelerator gets stuck and your “Space-Brakes” are out. Wow. This ship was obviously manufactured by Nissan. Your goal in the game is to get as far as you can before you crash and burn and are never heard from again.

The game has you constantly scrolling through the map and gaining speed as you dodge obstacles, shooting your gun all the way. The play space is littered with coins and various power ups, from temporary invincibility to a power shot that destroys everything. Every hundred coins grant you a score multiplier and an emergency bomb that annihilates everything with a simple double-tap from the player. You’re simply going for the high score in this game, playing the same level over and over, learning it’s layout as you progress.

The game can get extremely tiresome because of this. You may eventually get to see new level, but only after replaying the beginning part constantly. To mix things up, the game offers several different modes of play. There is Hardcore mode, which is just Normal mode with a single life, Coindown mode, which has your coins constantly draining as you play, and Super Speed mode, which is just normal mode cranked up to eleven. You also have the option of reversing the map on any of these, which basically just mirrors obstacles for variety’s sake.

The old school graphics and sound transport you to the simpler times of arcades. Everything is simple, but very well done. I especially love the chip-tunes soundtrack, which was fantastically done. This game supports Game Center leaderboards and achievements, and its iOS universal. This is a great retro style game for only one dollar, and anyone who likes that style should try it out.
