APPOLICIOUS ADVISOR RATING:

5 of 5 bars
  • PRICE: $0.99
  • TASTY: Familiar Cut The Rope elements reworked to create new challenges.
  • BUMMER: Makes us hungry for a true sequel to Cut The Rope. This is more Cut The Rope 1.5.
  • COOL: Rope shooters, which require careful timing and attention.

If you’re not familiar with Cut The Rope by now, you really should be. The puzzle game is among the most popular because of its simple genius: Swipe the screen to cut a rope that holds up a piece of candy, thereby manipulating it into the mouth of a little green pet monster called Om Nom. He’s cute, the game is simple in concept (but challenging in execution), and the gameplay is intuitive. All those things = fun.

ZeptoLab’s latest entry in the Cut The Rope franchise, Cut The Rope: Experiments, isn’t quite a sequel to the original, instead, it builds greatly on the original Cut The Rope concepts and then expands them sort of laterally instead of forward, reworking the challenge fans are used to in a different way. For example, as you cut ropes and swing candies through each stage in the original version of the game, you’d try to make that candy collide with stars positioned around the level in order to earn a high score before ending in Om Nom’s belly.

In Experiments, the stars don’t sit still — they move or disappear after a short time. Couple this dynamic with new tools like rope shooters that slightly change the way the game is played, and the result is Cut The Rope gameplay, but tilted a little bit, to add elements of precision and timing. It’s a great way to expand on the original, especially for fans; ZeptoLab has found a way to make Cut The Rope feel completely fresh.
