Egg Vs. Chicken makes for a clever action-puzzle game

Review for Egg vs. Chicken

APPOLICIOUS ADVISOR RATING:

4 of 5 bars
  • PRICE: Free
  • TASTY: Chickens come at you in large waves, making for a challenging game from the start.
  • BUMMER: Lack of additional game modes hurts replayability a bit.
  • COOL: Upgrades to help you rebuild hay-bail defenses or acquire bombs are a necessity in later levels.

Egg vs. Chicken never stops to ask the age-old question of which came first. Instead, this frantic action puzzler simply wonders which will survive longer. Combining the gameplay mechanics of a connect-three puzzle game with a sort of target-practice action game, Egg vs. Chicken is a highly addictive app.

Colorful and cartoon-like, you control a ferocious batch of eggs, determined not to get trampled on by all sorts of tough-looking chickens and roosters. As the feathered enemies approach from off in the distance, you line up eggs in groups of at least three, though larger groups also work, and unleash them at the enemy. Larger birds take more eggs to take down, and eventually you'll get different kinds of eggs with special properties that make them better to use against certain enemies.

It's a smart gameplay concept that only becomes more fun when you see how absolutely frantic the game gets. Although the first few levels start slowly, allowing you to get acclimating to the tap-based controls, the ends of even early levels quickly escalate into a mess of feathers and flying eggs going every which way.

While Egg vs. Chicken has the look of a cartoon game for kids, the gameplay is easily challenging enough for puzzle-loving adults. Kids can certainly still enjoy it, as they will be drawn in by the colorful graphics and the tiered challenge, but older gamers will find plenty to enjoy here. Egg vs. Chicken is a puzzle app everyone can enjoy.
