Need for Speed Hot Pursuit (iPhone) $4.99
The latest iPhone edition of the popular console racing game hit stores a few days ago, and if you like competitive multiplayer games, you’ll want to look into this one. Developer EA has packed quite a few features into this game, with high-quality graphics and three different play modes.
Evade cops in your high-performance street-racing car, or take down illegal racers as the police, with several different cars to choose from and something like 24 different tracks to explore. This is a high-profile release for racing fans -- it’s a little pricey, but it looks like EA is pushing the envelope here.
Splatterhouse (iPhone) $2.99
This port of the late '80s gory, arcade beat-’em-up suffers a bit in its small-screen translation to the iPhone, but it offers some pretty intense old-school action, nostalgia, and 8-bit blood and guts. This is an app designed for players who remember Splatterhouse from their younger days and are interested in a faithful, portable recreation, just in time for the release of an updated version for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Splatterhouse includes story, arcade and survival modes to give players a little variety, but the real draw is to pound away at hordes of monsters as you control a Jason-like unstoppable bruiser. It’s not for everyone, but old-school gamers will get a kick out of reliving Splatterhouse.
Icy Tower (iPhone) $2.99
The full version features four towers for players to scale, using a combination of tilt controls and touching the screen to send characters jumping from platform to platform. You’ll also get access to five different character avatars to use in the game, and the app lets you connect to Facebook to share high scores with your social network-bound competitors.
