January ushered in a new year, new hope and a truckload of new free iPhone apps. Here are a few to get your 2010 off on the right foot…er, app.
When your birthday rolls around, check out 100 Birthday Quotes by Michael Quach. It’s a good mix of philosophical and humorous sentiments celebrating our annual age parties. For example, one quote from the dry Boston comedian Steven Wright reads, “Last week the candle factory burned down. Everyone just stood around and sang, ‘Happy Birthday.’”
On a more serious note, identity theft is constantly becoming a greater issue in our society. Like the ubiquitous commercials say, “There’s an app for that.” The iStop ID Theft iPhone app by Au Fait Professional Services includes ways to prevent ID theft and steps to take should this unfortunately happen to you. Clearly, this information is also available online, but it’s not a bad idea to have it packaged in an iPhone app. Now might be a good time to prevent your identity from being compromised in the first place, and this iPhone app is certainly worth a download.
There was no shortage of decent, free iPhone games in January. CarnyBallLite by X Forward was updated with more levels. In this skee-ball-like iPhone game, you bowl a bright yellow ball into a stack of bright pink cans. Simple, yes, but fun too. And best of all – free.
Also in the simple-but-fun category, Heads Up: Hold ‘em Lite by Headlight Software was updated. While there are plenty of poker iPhone games available, I found this one clean, straight-forward and enjoyable. The controls are easy to use, and the computer opponent offers a reasonable amount of challenge.
Want an iPhone app that is at once musical, funny and creepy? Then download Piano Cats Free from Uptown Arts. Thirteen cats are lined up like a keyboard, eight white and five black. When you tap them, the computer-animated kitties emit meows, and their movements even vary from cat to cat. If you pop Piano Cats Free open at your next engagement, you’re sure to get some smiles – from the people that is. The cats just meow.
