We’ve got a mess of great games that deserve your attention this week. Leading the charge is Fieldrunners 2, a sequel to the popular tower defense title of the same name. It has quality graphics and some challenging levels, but it’s only one of five great titles that hit the iTunes App Store this week. Check out all of them below.
Fieldrunners 2 (iPhone, iPad) $2.99
Fieldrunners is a well-loved tower defense game on the iTunes App Store, and so the arrival of its sequel should make lots of players very happy. With some great graphics, lots of towers to build and upgrade, and three different difficulty modes for each level, there are plenty of bad guys on whom to turn your guns in Fieldrunners 2. There are 20 different towers to earn, buy and upgrade, plus Game Center support that lets you track your scores against tons of people all over the world. If you’re into tower defense, this is a game you should check out.
Synesthetic (iPhone, iPad) $1.99
A psychedelic art style, tight controls and lots of music are what make Synesthetic a very cool addition to your iOS game lineup. The game is all about navigating around a round cable as you move forward, dodging objects that block your path. The cool thing about each level, however, is that it’s based on music from your iOS device’s library. You can play through your own tracks in this rhythm title, with three different game modes for each level. You also get Game Center leaderboards for each track, too. Knights of the Round Cable (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
High-scoring arcade title Knights of the Round Cable is an addictive time-waster, and that’s the primary reason you should check it out. With tight, simple controls, the game makes it easy to play, but still challenging. The goal is to guide a knight around each stage, swinging from stationary pegs using a rope to grab gems. Swinging from peg-to-peg is easy to do, but before long, obstructions get in the way like dragons, ghosts, missiles and more. The more gems you can grab, the more power-ups you can purchase or additional knights you can recruit. It’s simple, engaging physics-based fun.
Metal Slug 3 (iPhone, iPad) $6.99
Side-scrolling, fast-paced shooter Metal Slug 3 was very cool back when it first appeared in arcades years ago, and now on iOS players have a chance to experience the run-and-gun action all over again. You’ll blast away at lots of enemies along the way and gather power-ups that make your weapons more powerful. The cool thing about this version of Metal Slug 3 is that it includes the game’s original arcade mode, plus a new mission-based mode that lets you play through levels in whichever order you want, in order to practice them.
Jewels with Buddies (iPhone, iPad) Free
The number of multiplayer titles in the App Store continues to increase, and Jewels with Buddies adds to the ranks by bringing competitive match-three action to players. If you’ve played games like Bejeweled, you know the gist of what’s going on here – move gems on a grid in order to make groups of three of the same kind to clear them. In Jewels with Buddies, you play against your friends or random opponents, in an attempt to gather as many points as possible as fast as possible. It’s also asynchronous, so you don’t have to have friends ready and waiting to play in order to start games with them.
