Draw Something by OMGPOP is already a massive success. It has 25 million registered users and 10 million active players every day, and there’s even talk of the company creating a TV show based on its drawing and guessing dynamic!
Like popular Zynga titles Words With Friends and Hanging With Friends, Draw Something is a turn-based two-player game. It’s easy to pick up and play when you have a few spare moments, and its handy push notifications let you know when it’s your turn to go.
There are three levels of difficulty and each player takes it in turn to draw the word offered up. The other player has to guess what has been sketched, and guessing correctly means earning coins. The harder the difficulty, the more coins you’ll earn. You’ll soon discover that coins become quite important.
Coins are the currency in Draw Something and let you buy bombs. Players can use these bombs to reveal single letters in the word you’re trying to guess. You start with just five but earn more by guessing your opponent’s drawings, or you can take advantage of an in-app purchase to arm yourself with plenty of bombs and take on all-comers.
The app is cross-platform. You can find your friends on Facebook who are playing and can battle against them whether they’re on an iOS or Android device. Or, you can play a random opponent (which has the potential to fall flat on its face if they decide to act up). It’s a fun way to spend a few minutes, but I did notice that the categorization of words can be a bit random. Some ‘easy’ level words seemed tougher than the ‘hard’ ones, and even in my short time of playing I encountered a repeat word. Hopefully, small quirks like this will be ironed-out with future updates. Adding more words, a few more brushes and better ‘undo’ capabilities will certainly see this game go from strength-to-strength. So far, it seems that the developers have been quite active in offering updates, though some customers are complaining of crashes in the latest version.
Overall, Draw Something is a lot of fun. It gives you the opportunity to be creative and offers plenty of laughs when you attempt to draw tricky words. It’s easy to see why it’s such a big hit. The game is offered in an ad-free format for $0.99, but there’s also a free version in the iTunes App Store if you want to try it out first.
