iPhone App Video Review: Cosmic Cab

by Andrew Koziara

Comsic Cab is a new tilt based driving game from Sybo Games. The concept is unique, the game is visually impressive, and there is a lot of humor, but the controls and level design can lead to frustration and rage.

In the spirit of the Crazy Taxi series, this is an insane game about picking up cab fares and taking them to a destination in particularly wild fashions. Except now, you're driving on a space highway, and how anyone gets anywhere on these winding death trap roads without crashing and burning is a mystery. You control the cab by tilting to turn, and tapping the screen to jump. Your goal is to get to the end of the level, picking up the three possible fares and as much anti-matter as you possibly can, all as quickly as you can, hoping for a big score. There are plenty of boosts to hit and various kinds of obstacles that stand in your way.

The game definitely stands apart from most games, but unfortunately that isn't enough to make up for the design. The tilt based controls can make the game very difficult, especially since you can't tweak sensitivity and there are no alternative control methods. The environment doesn't really help. There are plenty of cool jumps and memorable spiral segments, but they can be hard to pull off. Sometimes the full pipe track will open into a normal one faster than you can even react, or there will be a hole in the track that you can't even see until it's too late. Each level becomes an exercise in trial and error as you try to learn the layouts. Thankfully, there are plenty of checkpoints to lessen the pain.

The game looks and sounds great, and it's all pretty unique. You have a partner who automatically beams fares into your cab, leaving you to focus on driving. Each level opens with some humorous dialogue from him, and there's even a running story being told. If they can tweak the game to make it a bit more user friendly, I'd give it a full recommendation. It's only one dollar and it's iOS universal. If it looks like something you'd enjoy and you're willing to combat the controls, then take this app for a cosmic spin.
