After seeing a fortune's worth of fuss about this app I finally decided to try it. I've had it for several months now and I still don't get it.
The app is a companion piece for your Mint.com account. Mint.com is a pretty excellent site with great layout and quick visibility to all your accounts and budgets. So if you're like me and you want to see what all the talk is about, you're best to start there.
The app, unfortunately, has a different layout than the site. I don't expect it to be identical by any means, but it's not even close. It's got a completely different purpose and it's rather ugly.
The home screen gives a summary of everything that's going on in your financial life. Sounds great on the surface, but it's not the whole story and for me it's misleading. My financial life is complicated; it can't be summarized by a cash flow total or a bar graph of money in versus money out. I can get details, of course, but even they aren't detailed enough. All my expenses get categorized, sometimes in ways that aren't even accurate. It means I have to do a lot of work to have the app display my money life in a meaningful way.
What's really frustrating, though, is the budget feature, and this isn't just an app flaw but a service one. I budget $160.22 for my student loans, for example. For some reason, the service rounds this down to $160. Not a big deal ... until you get the monthly alert telling you you've gone over your loan budget by 22 cents.
Seriously, that's stupid.
If you want a good financial app, I'd recommend Pageonce. If there are no obstacles to adding your accounts - something that some users have trouble with, just as they do with Mint.com - it's a much clearer interface and service.
