Mint

Mint app is not available for Blackberry. I have used Mint online now for 8 months and am switching either back to my old Excel sheet or Pageonce, if it is any better. I have found Mint to be good for double checking my tracking on Excel, but there are so many duplicates and misses that it is not worth my time, as time goes on. Mint doesn't have the fixes to these issues. And why anyone has an app that RIM doesn't use, or the app isn't compatible with Blackberry is beyond me. Def not worth the time to load and try to use on a handheld.

After seeing a fortune's worth of fuss about this app I finally decided to try it. I've had it for several months now and I still don't get it.

The app is a companion piece for your Mint.com account. Mint.com is a pretty excellent site with great layout and quick visibility to all your accounts and budgets. So if you're like me and you want to see what all the talk is about, you're best to start there.

The app, unfortunately, has a different layout than the site. I don't expect it to be identical by any means, but it's not even close. It's got a completely different purpose and it's rather ugly.

The home screen gives a summary of everything that's going on in your financial life. Sounds great on the surface, but it's not the whole story and for me it's misleading. My financial life is complicated; it can't be summarized by a cash flow total or a bar graph of money in versus money out. I can get details, of course, but even they aren't detailed enough. All my expenses get categorized, sometimes in ways that aren't even accurate. It means I have to do a lot of work to have the app display my money life in a meaningful way.

What's really frustrating, though, is the budget feature, and this isn't just an app flaw but a service one. I budget $160.22 for my student loans, for example. For some reason, the service rounds this down to $160. Not a big deal ... until you get the monthly alert telling you you've gone over your loan budget by 22 cents.
Seriously, that's stupid.

If you want a good financial app, I'd recommend Pageonce. If there are no obstacles to adding your accounts - something that some users have trouble with, just as they do with Mint.com - it's a much clearer interface and service.

Mint is minty fresh

I like this app a lot, but I've always had problems with it working with Bank of America. Other than that, it saves me time as I don't have to log into my various credit card and bank accounts to check info.

Good but Scary.

I really love the idea of this app and site but frankly, I'm just too scared. I'd like to say for the record right now that I'm not a terribly paranoid person when it comes to online banking... it's basically all I use to pay bills and the like if at all possible. And indeed I just had my credit card info stolen but as is typical, it was stolen from a real life use (and likely through poor security at the merchant) and not online use or online banking.

All that said, this app scares me. Why? Because EVERY card, bank and every other bit of financial info is all in one place. And what's worse, apparently in one place with no password protection on your phone. That seems bad, really really bad.

There doesn't appear to be a lot of reports about this app or site being hacked and indeed with the backend of Intuit it is hopefully secure, but still, the TOS states that you basically can't do anything if they mess up and somehow release your info.

If at some point this app gets 5 stars for security I'll be all over it, but until that time comes I'll take a pass.

Doesn't work

I have contacted mint.com's customer service through e-mail because there is no number to call. My problem, like many others, is that there is trouble connecting my bank account to mint.com's services. I have looked on their forums and the only response to this from a representative is to try the customer service email again. Each time, no one writes back to help. Then, when we tell the Rep that, he says to contact him personally at a certain address. We do this....and no answer...

Makes Personal Banking (almost) Fun!

This app makes your Mint.com account easily available to view on your phone. Once you enter all your money related accounts, you can check your entire net worth with the tap of a finger. You can sign up for alerts when your balance is low and setting goals to set aside a little bit each month is a great tool and slightly takes the dread out personal money management! It seems to transform into a game after a while. I know when I'll feel so accomplished if I stay in the green zone a whole month! It hasn't happened yet, but soon!

Love the Idea but it's a little slow

I am a big fan of the personal finance/budgeting site Mint.com. It's very convenient to see all of my accounts (bank account, car loan, student loans, stocks & credit cards) in one place. The main downfall is that it sometimes takes a while to update - it can be up to a half a day off. I do have my Mint.com app set where you have to enter a password (very much recommended). In the newest release you can recategorize, add notes and tags to any of your transactions.

If you are budgeting/goal setting with your finances I recommend you sign up for Mint.com and use the app for a quick glance on the go.

Easy way to check bank statements and budgets on the go - I'd just recommend key-pad locking your phone so your information isn't easily accessible to others who may get their hands on your phone!

Great budget management tool

I initially had some trouble adding my local bank but tech support was great and fixed the problem within a couple of days. Now I can keep track of all my income, expenses and individual transactions. I can create a monthly and re-occurring budget. I get warned when I get late fees or finance charges and can keep track of my credit cards and car loan. I was pretty money conscious to begin with but this app helped me take it to a new level. I would highly recommend it and have had none of the problems that some other reviewers have talked about. Give it a try and see where your money is really going.

I like having all my bank transactions at my fingertips; however, Mint doesn't always update...meaning that I've had a few heart attacks thinking that direct deposit didn't go through. Wish it was a little more accurate and quick.

Good for quick reference

Mint.com is a great personal finance tracker, but the app still lacks some of the best features.

It shows you your accounts and recent spending, but lacks the ability to categorize the purchase. If this is your thing, you'll still need to go back into the full site to do this.

It's a great quick reference though to make sure your spending is on track and to keep up-to-date with your finances.

OH! It also supports push notifications for bank fees and credit card payments that are due, which is a really nice reminder feature!

Track your money on the go (v1.3)

I heard about Mint.com a while back but just started using it. I avoided checking it out at first being fearful of account information being online and whatnot. But now, I figure it's probably pretty safe since there hasn't been any really negative press. I was impressed with their site so I went ahead and grabbed the iPhone app.

The iPhone app is a very slimmed down version of the site and allows you to view your account balances, transactions, budgets, etc. You can set various alerts on the website and receive push notifications. However, you can't edit any information with the iPhone app.

With that said, what the app does do, it does well. For those unfamiliar with Mint.com, the site lets you set up your accounts (with numerous banks) and then pulls your account information automatically. Think of it as a single login for reading information from all of your banking websites. After your first login on the iPhone app, you can set a 4-digit password to launch the app. So now, I can check up on all my accounts while I'm out without having to input information manually.

Mint.com only pulls transactions once per day, although balances are refreshed on load or manually. For folks who need realtime updates on their transactions, Mint.com probably isn't for you and you're better off with the manual-entry type of apps. But, if you don't need to see the 5 bucks you just swiped for a sandwich on your debit card transactions list right away, give the app a try.

positives: quick and easy once you're setup; it's FREE (and so is the website); updates your transactions automatically daily

negatives: iPhone app not nearly as powerful as the website; only for reading data, not editing

Easy budget tracking and category information

Provides budget based on history so you don't need to do anything to set the budget for most interesting categories. Would love this application except after 5 months of asking they have NOT added our bank, so actually completely useless. So if they don't support your banks, don't bother as will only show negative information.

Beware

I was told about Mint and thus setup an account (you're required to provide much of your banking & credit info). About 5 days later my credit card was cancelled to a security breach. Perhaps a coincidence but my friend setup a Mint account around the same time and the exact same thing happened to her.

Helps me save!

Best financial assistant I have found. Takes all of my accounts and puts them in one place, groups/categorizes automatically, tracks budgets, and plenty more. The app is merely a portal into a slimmed down version of the web service. Very cool.

Life changing financial app.

The biggest problem i've had with past 'budget apps' is... you have to setup your budget. Mint.com takes it from the other direction: it observes how you spend your money, then builds up budgets based on actuals. The iPhone app provides ready, quick lookups to the website content. It's not ideal -- moving transactions from one category to another are still best done on the site. But I love it.
