Wifi Finding Apps  by jessicadally

jessicadally says: There's a lot of wifi finding apps out there. A person might wonder which one was the best, most accurate, has the best features, lists the most spots. The answer? None of them are perfect. Sadly if you're really searching for some webs you're going to likely want to have several of these on your phone as many of them seem to have missing hotspots at random times. That said, here's what rocks or stinks about each of these.
jessicadally's picks
  1. WiFi @
WiFi @ Like every other wifi search app out there this one has it's good points and it's bad points. It will let you know who is on your local area network which I can see being helpful if you're wanting to see who is either sucking up all the webs at your local Starbucks or catching your neighbor stealing your webs at home. It will also list a lot of local wifi networks that are available, letting you choose free or paid from the list. What it doesn't have is a good map to show you the locations of the wifi hot spots listed and it also doesn't allow you to submit changes for the spots currently listed. Beyond that I can also see that it occasionally lists business wifi networks as free networks which I suppose is true, if you work there. Not a bad app by any stretch but still not perfect.
  2. Free Wi-Fi
Free Wi-Fi I tend to test wifi hotspots around either my house or work. Each location has a somewhat hidden free wifi hotspot that all but the best apps will miss. By hidden I don't mean hard to find, down some dark alley. No, no. One is on a major highway but it's at a little corner grocery and likely something an app like this might miss. The other is a great nonprofit coffee shop here in Seattle that's an obvious choice for wifi but not a big chain and thus often skipped by these types of apps. Sadly this app does indeed skip these locations. It does do a wonderful job of showing you a map with locations but with so many hotspots missing this is hardly my favorite choice for a wifi finder app. Sure, you can let the app know they've missed a location, but doing so opens an email rather than filling in some of this information in app. This means you'd have to list address information along with everything else... stuff that could be done easily if it were integrated into the app itself. In the end this one just has a few too many missing pieces to qualify as the best of the free wifi finding apps.
  3. Wi-Fi Finder
Wi-Fi Finder Sigh. I want to love you Wi-Fi Finder. I like that you pop open a map of all the wifi locations, showing which are free, which are paid and even getting you to a eprint location if need be. That said, you fail at finding hotspots and thus I simply can't love you. In my particular hood at the moment this app is doing two things wrong. First it's listing a business wifi as free. I know that's not true as I'm in the same building with it and while you might be able to surf there you're unlikely to go randomly sit in some office on the web if you're not waiting for someone. It fails again by missing a number of coffee shops with free wifi nearby. There's a couple of things that make this app promising however and it's likely I'll keep it around for this alone. First, it's easy to submit new hotspots... the app will indeed locate you so you're not having to email in a bunch of info. Second it will download wifi hotspots in an area so you can see these when you're not connected. Pretty cool feature for when you really need to find a connection. Not a horrible app but certainly not something that is perfect. Not yet.
  4. Free WiFi Finder
Free WiFi Finder So right this very second I'm sitting at a great little coffee shop (Street Bean Espresso, a really cool nonprofit espresso joint that has the best espresso in Belltown Seattle... check out the mission here: http://streetbeanespresso.org/) and as you might guess, I'm on the web on free wifi. Great place, not a huge chain and a beautiful open store front that I like to use as an office replacement since my office is literally in a windowless basement. Great you say, but what does that have to do with this app? Well, according to this app there's no free wifi here. While playing with it on my phone there was also no free wifi at the corner grocery a block away according to the app even though I know there is. The app is quick and functional and I like the map overlay function much better than some of the other free wifi apps who don't show you stuff on a map, but in the end you're likely going to miss a number of free wifi hotspots with this app so don't count on it to be complete. If you're despirate and asking someone just won't do give this a go but do know you might have better luck asking someone around you and more importantly, don't plan your trips with this as you'll be lacking in a decent chunk of information.
