I tend to be wary of any app put out by a manufacturer. It smacks of advertising. Nikon Learn & Explore, however, is chock full of well-written articles offering photography tips and techniques for everyone, from the novice to the wanna-be pro.
The app allows users to browse articles by image. While the articles do specifically mention Nikon lenses and accessories, each is a veritable goldmine of picture-taking information. You’re choosing what to read based on the photograph rather than titles, so you never know what you’re going to get.
So far, my favorite article is called “How to (No Kidding) Read Your Camera Manual.” Which seems like a joke. Except for the fact that my own camera manual is still stuffed into the bottom of my camera bag, where it is as comprehensible as if it were propped up right in front of my face.
Tapping the “Learn” tab in the Nikon Learn & Explore app offers tips on technique, multiple articles on the fundamentals of photography, and 90-second video tutorials.
“Nikon World” is the Nikon photography magazine, and articles from issues back to fall 2008 can be viewed right there from your iPhone.
A huge glossary of photographic terms is available with a tap on the glossary tab.
The Nikon Learn & Explore app isn’t going to “do” anything for you. It is, however, a treasure trove of photographic knowledge available at your fingertips, where you and I both know your iPhone is at all times.
