APPOLICIOUS ADVISOR RATING:

4 of 5 bars
  • PRICE: Free
  • TASTY: Around 100 different comic books available for instant download and more added each week
  • BUMMER: Not all comic books are free
  • COOL: The comics are formatted to your screen, so no manual zooming is required

At first glace, iPhone’s iVerse Comics app resembles an appetizer buffet. You pay 99 cents up front and get access to free comic books that download to your iPhone in seconds for instant graphical gratification.

But that’s just to get you hungry. With about 14 different publishers and classic comics like Archie & Friends and IDW’s Star Trek series, only a third of some 100 comic books available are actually free—some are the first book in an ongoing series, so those who hate “To Be Continued” endings beware.

Paid titles are 99 cents each and can really add up when you consider many of the books are only roughly 15 to 30 pages long.

Still, the app excels with its presentation. Hold your iPhone vertical and you’ll get a full view of the page layout. Flip it horizontal and the app will zoom in on a single panel of the comic strip for easy reading and scrolling through frames.

Downloaded books are displayed on your bookshelf and can be accessed any time—great for iPod touch users, though Internet is required when browsing the store. This app from iVerse Comics includes new releases every week and can be set to alert you when there are updates to an ongoing series you’ve started.

Whether you’re already a comic book connoisseur or a first-time feaster, this is definitely one iPhone app that will make you go back for seconds.
